Review: Smokin’ on the Moon
You know what time it is; time for another overdue blog entry. As before, got a million, billion… make that a trillion things going on. Hence why the recaps of stuff tweeted are on hold for now. It’ll be back, eventually, tho till then you can… ya know… just follow along in realtime.
It’s also time for… the New York City Asian Film Festival! Said it before, I’ll say it again: the list of reasons for sticking around NYC keeps shrinking & shrinking, yet the Big Apple remains a cinephile’s paradise, with the NYAFF as the crown jewel. Period.
My NYAFF reports have been a staple of my homepage, though once again, I’ve got another video game related flick to discuss around these parts. Kinda. Sorta. And that’s Smokin’ on the Moon. I’ll just say this right now: nothing in front of the camera has anything to do with games. But behind the camera, it’s a different story.
To Be Absolutely Clear This Time: It’s A NES Playing A SNES Game
Again, tried to be as clear as possible with the title above, even though it’s perhaps too late since you might already know what the video’s all about, via the accompanying write-ups while making the rounds. And that’s the thing; I was one of the very first to stumble across and talk about it, when there were barely a hundred views (it’s currently well over 200,000).
Alas, I wasn’t super clear in my description on Twitter; I focused on how hella charming it was, but failed to properly convey what the hell it’s actually about, hence why it went ignored. Oh well, lesson in Social Media 101 learned. And here I am, posting it, late on a Friday night?
Long story short: was gonna swing by Death By Audio Arcade X Dreamhouse’s last hurrah, but something had been bothering me for the past few days and I finally had to resolve the matter: I actually failed to cover the latter half of last month in my recent two part updates.
Am talking about YouTube videos, specifically the embed cap. Part 2 had me working around this limitation as much as possible, but there’s several vids that I believe as much attention as possible, especially since… E3 is also here.
Everyone’s super distracted, hence another reason why my timing here is maybe poor. It’s also why I’m skipping this upcoming regularly scheduled Monday update. Instead, am going to play catch-up by presenting the leftovers from May, along with a few clips during the first part of June.

“weLCUM to the motherfucking Queer matrixXx”
In part 1 of my recap of stuff tweeted during the later half of May, over at @AttractMode, I mentioned that one thing that kept me awfully busy… hence the backlog and two-part recap for Tumblr & Medium… was Death By Audio Arcade X Dreamhouse II.
The proper/full name of the soiree was Ova the Rainbow: DreamBoxXx, which is where most of these photos were taken, with a few from Death By Audio Arcade X Dreamhouse I; the photographer on the behalf of Gothamist was there for both opening & closing parties, to help add color to their story…

… BTW, the arcade will open one last time, this Friday (June 8th). Doors open at 7!

Nothing Sez “Student Game” More Than The Dinosaur Evening News (that’s a good thing, btw)
The above is Mediazoic, which takes place in an alternate reality in which dinosaurs have come back to rule the earth and they’ve hired you, puny human, to make sure their televised broadcasts are dino family safe.
You moderate comments left on message boards, censor full frontal dino nudity, and so on. It’s a student game alright, and one of my top picks from the NYU Game Center Student Showcase2018!
I was also fond of Dreams For Your Computer because CRTs, magnets, and cats…

… Here’s what it looks like in action, btw.
Though the one game that I liked the most, and which would actually fare well on the marketplace, would have to be Static…
And honorable mention goes to an updated take on Flight Simulator, which recreates a 6 hour long commercial flight as a passenger…

… The best part was the look on Stephen Totilo’s face, who kinda didn’t get it.
